건축주는 10대 시절에 교통사고로 몸이 불편해 졌다.

그리고 그 이후 적지 않은 시간동안 침대에 누워서 생활할 수 밖에 없었고, 그런 건축주가  하루종일 보는 대부분의 풍경은 오래된 집의 낡은 천장과 그 곳에 달린 형광등 이었다.

건축주의 집은 서해안 섬지역의 바람과 눈 탓인지 지붕이 낮고 대신 처마는 길게 뻗어 있었다. 그래서 건축주 방은 창을 통해 빛이 들지 않아 늘 어두워서 형광등을 켜고 지낼 수 밖에 없었고, 단열이 부족해서인지 겨울엔 춥고 여름에는 습하고 눅눅했다. 또한 욕실도 춥고 어둡고, 무엇보다 다른 사람이 건축주를 도와 씻는 등의 생활이 불편한 구조였다. 

하지만 이러한 물리적 불편함 뿐만 아니라 건축주에게 또한 아쉬웠던 것은 가족들과 소통하기가 어려운 집 구조였다. 건축주집은 복도형식의 공간구조로 건축주방에서는 가족들의 모습을 보기가 어려웠다. 특히나 동생들과 조카들이 놀러왔을때도 건축주는 귀로만 들을 수 있을 뿐이지, 거실 혹은 마당에서 노는 조카들의 모습을 보지 못하고 홀로 그 아쉬움을 달래야만 했다.

이에 건축주는 본인을 위한 선물을 주기로 하였고, 그 선물로 하루종일 해가 잘 들어 밝고, 따뜻하고, 눈을 떴을때 형광등이 아닌 하늘과 주위의 풍경을 볼 수 있고, 본인의 침대에 누어서 오고 가는 가족들을 볼 수 있는 그런 집을 짓기로 하였다. 

건축주는 어머니와 아버지, 그리고 옆집에 사시는 외할머니와 함께 지낸다. 따라서 넓을 필요없는 적당한 크기의 집을 원했다. 다만 가끔 오는 동생들과 조카들을 위한 작은 2층방이 있었으면 했다. 

설계과정에서 가장 고민했던 것은 남동향의 땅에 지어지는 집에 어떻게 하면 하루종일 빛이 잘 들어서 형광등을 켜지 않아도 되는 밝은 집을 만들 것이냐 하는 것과 건축주가 집안에서 주변의 마당과 정원의 풍경을 쉽게 볼 수 있게 할 것이냐 하는 것이었다. 즉, 집이 개방적이어서 빛과 시선이 외부로 잘 연결될 수 있게끔 하고자 하였다. 

집은 중앙을 관통하는 거실 겸 복도를 통해 내부의 모든 실들과 연결이 되고, 이 공간을 통해 또한 네 방향의 마당 모두를 향해서도 통하게 된다. 따라서 집은 시각적으로 닫힘이 없이 주변을 향해 연결이 되고, 역박공모양의 지붕 형태로 인해 빛은 집안 깊숙이 들어올 수 있다.  

또한 집의 단열과 축열, 그리고 높은 천정고의 습조절을 고려해 저층부는 철근콘크리트 구조이고 상층부는 경량목구조의 외단열형식과 웜루프(warm-roof) 방식을 적용하였다. 여기에 역박공모양의 지붕 구조를 해결하기 위해 철골트러스를 활용해 지붕의 중앙에 모이는 하중을 분산시켰다.

건축주는 비록 몸은 좀 불편하지만, 늘 긍정적이고 의욕적이다. 그는 여느 건축주보다도 더 열정을 가지고 집에 대한 고민을 함께 나누었다. 특히나 완공이 되서 집에 이사를 하기 전까지는 오직 사진과 동영상만으로 집이 공사되어 가는 과정을 확인해 볼 수 밖에 없었고, 이는 매우 풍부한 상상력이 필요함에도 불구하고, 건축주는 예리한 눈과 마음으로 그 과정을 즐기셨다. 

집을 짓는 다는 것은 언제나 큰 책임감이 따르는 일이다. 늘 그러려 노력하지만 참으로 어려운 일이다. 이 집을 처음 시작하면서 건축주가 했던 말이 있다. 자신이 눈을 감을때 마지막으로 보는 장면이 될 집이니 잘 만들어졌으면 좋겠다는 것이다.  그 어떤 것보다 집을 짓는 다는 것의 의미를 가슴으로 느끼게 해준 말이었고 그런 프로젝트였다.

The owner of the house had been injured from a car accident in his teens.

Since the accident, he was forced to spend much of his time in bed and during these long hours, the only thing in his view was the old ceiling and lamps of his old house.

Perhaps it was because of the wind and snow on the western coast island, the roof of the house was low and the house had a long eaves. The owner always had the lights on in his room, it being dark from the lack of sunlight through the windows. The house was cold during the winter and humid during the summers due to the poor insulation. Even the bathroom was cold and dark, making it even more difficult when a helper assisted the owner in washing himself.

More than these physical discomforts, what the owner disliked most was the difficulty in communicating with his family. Because the house was composed of hallways, it was hard to catch sight of his family from his room. On the days his siblings and his nephews and nieces visited, he could only hear their presence through his ears. He regretted that he could never see his nephews and nieces play in the living room or out in the yard.

Finally, the owner decided to give himself a gift. A gift of a house that was warm and bright with sunlight all day long. A house that had a view of the sky, instead of lamps. A house where his family was visible right from his bed.

The owner lived with his mother and father, and his grandmother lived in the house right next door. All he wanted was a house with enough room for the three of them with a small room on the second floor for his siblings and nephews and nieces when they visited.

During the design process, the issues he pondered most was how to build a southeast-facing house that would be bright all day long without having to turn on the lights, the house. In short, he wanted an open house that was well connected to the sunlight and external surroundings.

The house would be composed of a living room at the center with a hallway that was connected to everything in the house, yard in four directions. Thus, the house had no visible dead ends, was always connected to the surroundings, and sunlight would saturate the entire house thanks to the reverse gable roof structure. 

In order to insulate, heat, and adjust the humidity of the house through high ceilings, the house used an external insulation level of the house was made of reinforced concreted, while the upper level was made of a lightweight wood frame. In order to resolve the issue of the reverse gable roof structure, steel truss was used to disperse the weight of the roof that was concentrated in the middle.

The owner might have been physically uncomfortable, but he was always optimistic and determined. He was more passionate than any other building owner and always shared his concerns about the house. Until the day he moved into the finished house, he could only see the construction process through pictures and videos, and despite the vast amount of imagination this would have required, the owner enjoyed every minute of the process with his keen eyes and mind.

Building a house comes with great responsibilities. Though we always try to do our best, it’s not always easy. The building owner said something to me when the house first went under construction.
